How To Take Care of Your Hair

Everyone has had a bad hair day. When I have a bad hair day I usually resort to styling my hair as a bun. Shabby but chic!

I’ve come across so many women with amazing hair. Whether it was straight, wavy or curly, they had a gorgeous head of hair. What were these women doing different or more, maybe? Nothing actually.

They knew their hair type and how to take care of it accordingly. Hair can be divided into 4 types mainly. This is different from the words used to describe the texture or condition of the hair like, frizzy, oily, dry and normal.

Straight Hair

25836-Long-Straight-Hair

Straight hair is probably one of the most sought after hair type. Straight hair usually has fine and thin strands of hair. One of the issues of straight hair is volume. Straight hair tends to hang limp with no body whatsoever.

A few tips for straight hair

- Opt for a gentle shampoo and mild conditioner.

- When brushing your hair start from the tips to the roots. Make sure you brush carefully otherwise you can damage your hair.

- When washing your hair, use warm water, not hot water. Hot water weakens hair.

Curly Hair

hairstyles-for-curly-hair

Curly hair is more prone to frizzing and becoming dry as well as coarse. This is due to curly hair being more fragile. Curly hair needs more looking after. If it isn’t moisturised regularly it can create a lot of damage.

A few tips for curly hair.

- Washing your hair everyday makes it dehydrated making it frizzy, opt for washing your hair every few days.

- If you ever use a comb, go for a wide toothed comb. Excessive brushing makes it frizzy and unmanageable. Use you fingers to lightly comb through your hair.

- For drying your hair after a shower don’t rub a towel. Squeeze the excess water onto it and apply a styling cream or anti frizz serum while your hair is damp.

Wavy hair

naturally-wavy-hair-styling-tips

Wavy hair is usually coarse and thick. Two major problems faced by people with wavy hair are frizziness and lack of volume.

A few tips for Wavy hair

- Opt for a volumising shampoo.

- To prevent frizz apply a light leave in condtioner.

- While drying your hair, don’t rub the towel against your hair. Pat it dry. This helps in keeping the frizziness at bay.

Processed Hair

kevin-murphy-color-bug

If you’re hair is bleached, dyed, relaxed or chemically straightened your hair falls in this category.

When washing your hair, it’s better to opt for a conditioning shampoo (preferably one meant for coloured hair) since your hair is likely to be damaged by the all the chemicals. Once you’re done rinsing your hair, apply a rich conditioner to the hair tips and length.

Since processed hair is porous, it will absorb anything you apply on it, which means you have to throughly rinse your hair once you apply shampoo or conditioner.

A few tips for processed hair.

- Make sure you wash every few days to prevent it from drying out further.

- Make sure you trim regularly to prevent split ends.

- Use a conditioner or hot oil for the ends of your hair to prevent dryness and split ends.

Watch out for Part 2 next week, where I’ll be covering natural remedies to treat frizzy, oily and dry hair.

Loving This Week: Teeki

This week we are totally obsessed with Teeki. Teeki is an eco conscious activewear line. They have a collection of gorgeous printed leggings, capri’s and shorts for men, women and kids. Our workout wardrobes definitely got a lot funkier!

The Best part about this line, other than being totally fashionable is that they are made out of recycled water bottled and the printing process is eco friendly as well! Each pair of leggings recycles approximately 25 plastic bottles.

Korean Beauty Secrets

My best friend is obsessed with K pop and practically everything related to Koreans. So naturally she pulled me into it. While I can’t sit through a single episode of Korean dramas (way too lovey dovey for my taste), I listen to their music sometimes and I love the movie called 200 Pound Beauty!

Koreans have certain beauty standards that might be considered different to western culture. While its all the rage to be tanned in America, Koreans prefer snow white skin.

Koreans are really obsessed with beauty. Other than being one of the places where plastic surgery ads are commonly seen on the streets, they also have beauty secrets. The one I’ll talking about is the 10 step skincare rountine

The 10 Step Skincare Routine

Because your usual cleanse, tone and moisturise isn’t enough. “Skincare is a culture in Korea”, so it’s obvious that these women would definitely have a lengthier skincare regime.

Step 1 – Remove the day’s makeup with a moist towelette. Next use a gentle oil cleanser to remove any sebum or any impurities that might be found on your skin.

Step 2 – Wash your face with a mild cleanser or face wash.

Step 3 – Exfoliate problem areas. If you have visible pores or blackheads, concentrate on those parts of the face.

Step 4 – Pat your face dry and apply toner on your face. Opt for toners that are hydrating.

Step 5 – Apply Essence. It’s a nourishing liquid that is concentrated and helps improve elasticity, firmness and brightness.

Step 6 – Apply Ampoule. It’s a more condensed version of essence and is packed with vitamins. A few drops is enough.

Step 7 – It’s Mask time. Do this only 2 or 3 times a week. You can opt for facial sheet masks or you can choose an eye patches that boost collagen or a lip mask that hydrates your lips.

Step 8 – Eye cream. While applying eye cream make sure you don’t tug at the skin or pull it. Be as gentle as you can.

Step 9 – Emulsify. Basically apply a moisturiser on your face and neck

Step 10 – Cream mask. Apply a layer of night cream. This helps keep your skin hydrated throughout the night.

90′s Fashion Comeback

Fashion keeps getting recycled and reinvented. Lately I’ve quite a few trends that reminds me of fashion back in the 90′s.

You’d be surprised to find what made the list

High waisted jeans

vintage-80s90s-high-waisted-bongo-jeans-fitted-leg-blue-denim_1

With the rise of the low waisted skinny jeans in the last couple of years, I’m glad to see both high waisted and low waisted jeans coexist peacefully on the racks.

Ripped jeans

ripped-jeans

The 90′s is often thought of as the grunge era, what’s more grunge than ripped jeans? Ripped jeans are now a wardrobe staple if you want a casual look.

Harem pants

mc

Remember the iconic parachute pants MC Hammer wore in his music video? Well harem pants are back. They don’t have a puffy look that parachute pants do, they are more tailored.

Sneakers

Grey-New-Balance-sneakers-600x400

Recently luxury fashion houses like Chanel and Dior have come out with “fashionable” sneakers. Needless to say, sneakers are the biggest shoe trend right now.

Denim overalls

tumblr_lgs5q5ZQEi1qbz9meo1_500

Overalls were big back in the 90′s. It’s slowly creeping back in our wardrobes right now. But now we have a variety of overalls to choose from and not only denim.

Timberland boots

fajmbdozrbyxthyxpbw1

Timberland boots are regularly seen on celebrities like Jay Z, Chris Brown and many others. Since they have a celebrity following, it’s not too long before these are seen on every other person.

Flannel/ Plaid shirts

flannels_173113

Flannel shirts in the 90′s were never buttoned. It was always worn on top of a graphic Tee. Now it’s worn buttoned up and tucked in or tied around the waist or even layered beneath a sweater.

90′s Supermodel Nostalgia

September is the most important and fashionable month of the year. The magazines are outrageously thick and are filled with amazing editorials and glossy campaigns.

Thinking about this got me nostalgic about the time when supermodels used to grace the covers of Vogue.

Think more along the lines of Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Kate Moss and Brooke Shields instead of celebrities from the film or music industry.

Look at these 90′s Vogue covers, they seem like they are from a different era.

Pint sized Fashion

Kids are adorable. What makes them even more adorable? Fashion of course!

Needless to say, but kids nowadays are more fashionable than I ever was back in the day. Hopefully nobody will ever see all the horrible outfits I wore. Ah the time before camera phones. You could get away with almost anything!

Here are my favourite pint sized fashionistas who can give you a run for your money!

Loving This Week: Braids Part 2

I decided to split my favourite braid hairstyles into two parts otherwise it would have been too long. Since the human attention span now is at all time low, I thought, well two short posts are definitely better than one long one!

So here are the rest of my favourites!

Milkmaid Braid

Milkmaid-Braid

This hairstyle is pretty straight forward.

Start by part your hair down the middle and by dividing it into two equal sections. Now with each section of hair, do a three strand braid AKA the regular braid.

Once your done braiding your hair, tie it with a hair tie. Pick up one braid and lay it on the opposite side of your head and pin it down.

Do the same with the other braid and voila, you’re done.

Milkmaid Braid.

Dutch Side Braid

Screen-Shot-2012-12-14-at-10.25.47-AM

It’s exactly like a dutch braid except that the braid starts from the side. Hence the name of the hairstyle!

The dutch braid is similar to the french plait. In the french braid the sections of hair go over each other, while in the dutch braid the sections of hair go under each other.

First, start off by parting your hair to the side. Pick up the front part and divide it into three sections. Instead of going over each section of hair, go under.

Now as you progress, keep picking up sections of hair on either side like it’s done with a french plait. Keep braiding until you reach the end of your hair.

Fishtail braid

Tory-Burch-ss-2013-fishtail-braid

The fishtail plait is great for those who want to add more length to their hair. Due to the way it’s braided, it gives the illusion of longer length.

You can start with your hair down or in a ponytail. Next divide your hair into two equal sections.

Take a small section of hair from the outside of one of the two main sections and bring it to the inside of the opposite section.
Then take a small section of hair from the outside of the other section and bring it to the inside of the opposite section, then pull tight.
Keep going until you reach the end and tie your plait with a hair tie.

Loving This Week: Braids Part 1

My go to hairstyle for the summer are braids. Since I have long hair, I don’t usually leave it open since its really hot. If I get bored of ponytails and have a bit of time I go for a classic French braid/ plait.

Here are some of my favourite braid hairstyles.

French Plait

French-Plait-Hairdo10

Unless you’ve had a lot of practice, it’s better if you can get someone to do your hair for this style of braiding.

Start of by sectioning the top part of your hair. You can use your forehead as a scale of measure. The middle of your forehead is good. Using your thumbs or a rat tail comb, pick up and section off the hair.

Now divide it into three parts and start crossing each strand once. Then start picking up equal sections of hair on either side, adding it to the existing braid and crossing it. Repeat it on either side till there’s no hair left.

When you reach the nape of your neck, you can braid the rest of your hair normally or you can just tie a hair tie and leave it that way.

Basket weave braid

Basket-Weave-Side-Braid-for-Long-Hair

Also known as the 5 strand braid or 5 strand french plait, the basket weave plait is probably one of the tougher braid hairstyles. You definitely need two people if you’re trying it out for the first time.

You divide your hair into 5 sections.

Take the last section on the left or right side, which ever you want and go over the second section and under the third section.

Next take the fifth strand and go over the fourth and under the third. Keep doing this until you reach the end of your hair.

If you still don’t understand, here is a good tutorial by Youtuber Mimi who has a hair extension brand called Luxy Hair.

Waterfall braid

waterfall braid article

Waterfall braids are perfect for any occasion. The best part is it’s easy to pick up. To add more glamour you can curl your hair and then braid it.

First start with a side parting, then pick up three sections of hair. Its basically a simple braid but you have to keep dropping a section of hair and pick up a new section and add it to the braid.

Take the second section of hair and go over the first section and under the third section and drop it down. Pick up another section of hair and repeat until you reach the other side. You will need a couple of clips or bobby pins to secure it.
