What are your 3 favorite skin care products Amira?

Tips to protect your skin from the hot summer months ahead?

I wear a moisturizer with SPF 15 every day, and a BB cream by Smashbox that also has SPF. When I’m at the beach, I wear SPF on my entire body of course, and always a hat to protect my face from the sun, as I am quite fair. But I do love getting a very gradual glow throughout the Summer months.

How do you prepare for beach time?

As one of the Flywheel Dubai owners, I am of course a huge Flywheel and FlyBarre addict, and I exercise 6 to 7 days a week. I mix my Flywheel /Flybarre routine with circuit training with my personal trainer, and in Summer I enjoy running outdoors too. I try to do one or two half marathons a year.

What are the colors or trends for Summer 2013?

There is a move from punk rock and late 80s neons to a more earthy feel this Spring/Summer. I feel like tribal prints, bohemian jet set, and western/native american looks are in this Summer, which I love, as I enjoy bringing in unique pieces, beading and fun accessories to an outfit. Strong colors are also in. Denim cut off shorts with cool tops, and fun summer dresses are my go to outfits. Maxi dresses are huge this summer also! And the color turquoise….my absolute favorite!

Must have accessories this summer?

I think we’ve moved away from one single it-bag. Women are showing their more unique side with tribal print bags, wedge sneakers by Nike in unique prints, and accessories that look like they were found on a trip or an adventure.

Summer recipes?

I eat a lot of salads,fruit and fish in the Summer. They are my favorite foods throughout the year, but when it gets warmer outside, light and flavorful in-season food is what I enjoy eating and cooking. I try to buy seasonal organic ingredients from the Union Square market, which isn’t too far from my house.

How do you keep a balance in your busy life and schedules?

The only way I make it work (and it doesn’t always work every day), is by being very disciplined and organized. I never make an excuse when it comes to my family, my duties as a mother, my duties toward my businesses in Dubai, and my exercise routine. I also volunteer at my sons’ school (the Lycee Francais de New York), and will be co-chairing the Spring Gala in 2014, which I am thrilled to do, as I love our school. I believe that keeping busy and getting involved whenever you can, is both the key to success and happiness. I love interacting with people, and working creatively, so I always enjoy meeting new and inspiring people, whether my riders at Flywheel, mothers at apple seeds or at my sons’ school, or the people I work with every day in my team. That being said, I’ve learnt to say no at times, as there are only so many hours in the day. I do all the majority of my work on my Blackberry (where I have been known to be able to type faster than anyone I know! Ha!) but I am sure to turn it off every day from 6pm to 11pm, when it’s time to be with my husband and children.

Other favorite wellness tips for our audience?

I have discovered drinking green juices over the last 3 years, and I drink one or 2 juices (kale, parsley, ginger, green apple, lemon and spinach) every single day. I also take whole food supplements like fish oil, chlorella (which is an algae that has amazing effects on sustaining our immune system and cleansing our bodies from toxins), astaxanthin (a derivative of an algae), E3Live, and Aloe Vera drinks which again strengthen our bodies. What you eat and drink is definitely reflected in your skin and body, and I’ve noticed a much healthier glow since I’ve been taking in more greens! I also drink gallons of water every day.

I enjoy working out almost every day, which keeps me strong, healthy of mind and body, and gives me confidence. I think the most important asset a woman can have is feeling confident and happy in her skin…..and a good blush, BB cream, and waterproof mascara!

Don’t Forget To Protect the Hands!

Many people spend a lot of time protecting their skin with SPF on their face and neck but forget their hands!
Your hands will show sun damage and age more quickly than you think. While your face may remain line free, smooth and glowing thanks to state of the art treatments, your hands may do the opposite. When you treat your delicate facial skin, you should be treating your delicate hand skin right along with it. The production of collagen will begin to slow down once you hit your 30’s.
SPF is the key. While applying your daily facial sunscreen, make sure to always apply it to the backs of your hands. If you have a day outdoors planned, it is especially important to reapply.
A few other tips to protecting your hands:
– Avoid washing your hands with hot water. Use lukewarm water to retain moisture.
– While working around the house (doing dishes or while using household chemicals) wear gloves!
– Reapply lotion/sunscreen every time you wash.

Maryam Zamani ( www.drmaryamzamani) is an American trained and board certified Ophthalmologist, whose experience with oculoplastic surgery and dermatology comes together to provide clients in London with a perfect blend of facial Aesthetic treatments for a natural looking result.

Maryam completed her undergraduate training at Georgetown University and obtained her medical doctorate at the George Washington University School of Medicine. She continued her Ophthalmic training at George Washington University, where she remained on as a teaching faculty member. When she relocated to London, she underwent two Oculoplastic fellowships at Imperial College NHS Trust and Chelsea Westminster NHS Trust. She further complimented her facial aesthetics expertise with dermatology training at Cardiff University. Maryam has worked as an Ophthalmologist in both the US and UK, and she has been published extensively in academic journals.

What are your tips to protect your skin from the hot summer months ahead?

-Cover up with sunglasses, hats and always wear a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB radiation with an SPF of 30 or greater.  Most importantly is to apply the sunscreen 30 minutes before you go out into the sun and to constantly re-apply.  If you forget and your skin is a bit red and irritated, a little bit of aloe vera will make it feel better and try to skip the sun the next day.

How do you prepare for beach time holidays?

Well, I always like to exercise but I just started going to Barry’s Bootcamp and it is super hard but insanely motivating to have everyone around your working their bums off.  Of course summer is the perfect motivation!
How would you describe your style?

Style wise I am classic with a little twist.  I am loving the rock n roll knuckle rings and feathers by my dear friend Mesi Shashoua.

Must have accessories this summer?

Anything that is bright and with color! And never forget a beautiful manicure and pedicure.
How do you keep a balance in your busy life?

I think it’s always important to do what you love and be surrounded by people you enjoy; then your days are balanced and effortless….and of course being a bit neurotic, liking making lists, helps ensure nothing is forgotten!  At this stage working part time for me creates a great balance of being a mother, wife and doctor.

Are you involved with any special projects or charities?

I am involved with GOSH, Great Ormond Street Hospital, a children’s hospital in London and I am helping organize a fun under the big top themed party for 300 kids and their parents to raise money for the hospital.

The Health Benefits of Ginger and Lemon Every Morning

A glass of water with a few lemon drops and a slab of ginger is great because the ginger actually activates blood circulation in your body and improves overall radiance but also helps improve the tone of your skin! Try drinking this everyday in the morning for a boost of energy from the hydration and also from the improved circulation! It’s actually really refreshing and ginger is great to help fight off colds as well.

Lemons

Lemon juice contains high levels of potassium and vitamin C. A strong antioxidant, lemon juice is also a mild diuretic, so adding lemons to your drinking water can help support your liver and kidneys in their natural job of flushing out toxins.

Ginger

Fresh ginger contains something called gingerol, which possesses anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties and aids in healthy cellular activity in the gastrointestinal tract.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1/2 inch knob of ginger sliced thinly or grated
  • lemon
  • cup of hot water

Simply pour boiling water over the ginger, let steep for about 5mins then add lemon juice.

Barry Ennis is a Los Angeles native currently living in Dubai, UAE. Barry has extensive experience as a male model as well as a E-RYT yoga instructor, cyclist, and as the founder of Elite Sport Yoga.
Barry’s first passion is fitness, and through his life has gained experience in sports psychology, nutrition, strength training, flexibility training, yoga, conditioning, rehab, sports medicine, and life philosophy. He brings all of this knowledge together to create unparalleled fitness experiences through teaching indoor cycling and barre series classes at Flywheel Sports as well as through his personalized training.

We interviewed Barry to find out more and share some of his tips on keeping fit this summer with you.

Tell us about yourself Barry

I first got started in the fitness industry after completing college. There wasn’t much I wanted to do with a Psychology degree. I played college and semi-pro baseball, and through that training fell in love with yoga which was used to help us prevent injury and maintain mental peace of mind on the field. I decided to get a yoga teaching certification and began teaching yoga for athletes. Since then I’ve fallen in love with cycling and indoor cycling, and my journey has taken me all over the world- to different parts of the US for trainings and certification programs, to India to study life management and yoga philosophy. Since then I’ve been working in Dubai at Flywheel Sports teaching indoor cycling and barre series classes. I love to weave in the psychology and philosophy that I’ve learned to make each class more than just a workout, but an experience to help us all to higher heights.

What are some challenges or obstacles about staying fit in Dubai?
The whole Dubai lifestyle can for many be a big challenge to overcome. Most expats are here for a job opportunity, and that day-to-day life sends us rushing around the city from one thing to the next. Food is grabbed on the go a lot of the time, and it’s difficult in general to remember to take time for yourself and your health. It’s often not regarded as something as important as other aspects of life. Generally, the city is not conducive to those interested in an active lifestyle, but with more gyms and studios popping up in Dubai, it’s become harder to find excuses not to go!

How do you motivate your clients into staying in shape?
It’s so much more than the workout itself. I encourage and invite all class participants to delve into deeper aspects of themselves in class. When you feel like your body and mind are resisting you- when it feels like you’re up against a wall- how do you respond? There are so many life principles that can be learned and practiced in the context of exercising your body. The same tendencies we have in our work, our romantic relationships, our personal development, etc. all come up again in class when you’re literally being met with resistance. If you’re the type to not give yourself a chance mentally and give up, it’s possible in a fitness class to learn how to shake off these demons, change your way of thinking, change your attitude, and therefore change more about yourself than just your body.

What are the fastest ways to shed the extra pounds?

That means you’re going to keep your heart rate elevated and you will not only burn calories in class, but for a few hours afterwards as well since interval training spikes your metabolism. I’m actually a vegetarian, and want to raise awareness that it’s just as easy to get protein from other sources rather than from meat. There are so many misconceptions about meat and why we think we have to eat it. I’m part of a group called Animal Protection. A 7 Minute Workout That Really Works

The scientific seven-minute workout is the result of a study published in ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal, which set out to find the ideal high-intensity circuit training workout that relies only on a person’s body weight and achieves maximum results in a short period of time.
The team behind the study found 12 exercises that, when performed in rapid succession for 30 seconds each, can have the same results as a long endurance workout. The 12 exercises are:
1. Jumping jacks
2. Wall sit
3. Push-ups
4. Crunches
5. Step-ups onto a chair
6. Squat
