Why Juicing Is A Must

Everyone has probably heard of juicing. When I first heard of it, I was skeptical. Mostly because I really didn’t like the sound (and taste) of liquified veggies and fruits together. But the more I read about the benefits, I was getting really interested in giving it a try.

A few tips about juicing. Invest in a good juicer. Start off by juicing fruits and veggies you actually like eating whole. Juicing isn’t a full meal, you have to incorporate into your daily food intake.

Juicing has a lot of benefits like,

- Weight Loss

- Improving overall health

- Increasing intake of vegetables/ fruits

- Consuming a wider variety of vegetables/ fruits

- Absorbing all the nutrients from the vegetables/ fruits

I started off by juicing green apples, carrots and mint leaves. It tasted quite good so I’ll be looking out for new recipes to try. Here are some recipes that caught my eye.

Morning Glory - It contains beetroot, carrot and orange. It helps in cleansing the liver and blood. It also helps in weight loss.

Heart Beet – It contains apple, beetroot, carrot, lemon and orange. It improves digestion and your complexion.

Introducing Our Latest Fitness Obsession: Twerkout!

Today we interview twerkout instructor Johana O from Miami, who’s discussing why  twerking is all the rage and the next best workout in Dubai!

What is Twerkout and why should everyone try it?

Twerkout is the new – women only – funnest workout dance party in Dubai designed to get you more fit, toned, and sexy. Twerkout is a unique cardio dance class that disguises the feeling of working out because you are dancing to popular hip hop and electronic songs that you love such as Beyonce, Rihanna, Kate Perry, etc all in a fun club-like atmosphere. You gain so much more than just losing weight! It’s an experience like no other, and that’s why every women (of all ages 18 and older) become part of the Twerkout community in Dubai.

Can you tell us how Twerkout become a fitness work out?

My passion for dancing and performing inspired the Twerkout class. Working out can be extremely boring and monotonous so I wanted to create a fun and dynamic workout specifically designed to shape the female physique, something that women would actually enjoy. Twerkout connects dancing and working out in a fun club atmosphere with a classy and sassy twist along with clever routines that will keep you dancing for hours. The Twerkout regular attendees say they prefer this workout over any other because it’s easy, fun, and productive (in many ways other than getting an awesome workout).

How does it get someone in shape?

You can expect to burn anywhere from 400 – 1,000 calories each Twerkout class (FYI: running one mile burns around 100 calories). Keeping in mind that results differ from person to person depending on activity level and eating habits. If you are a regular Twerkout member you can expect to see results particularly in the right areas that women typically target, such as waistline, legs, arms, and buttocks.

Do you have to be a good dancer to do twerkout?

You don’t have be a dancer at all to Twerkout. The class has easy combination routines that are quick to pick up. The class is designed to not only lose weight but also to improve your dancing skills one step at a time with one-on-one tips from instructors on how to move your body to get a better workout, and look and feel sexier at the same time. Yes, it’s possible to do both with Twerkout!

How is it different to Zumba?

The difference between Twerkout and Zumba is that Zumba uses more traditional dance moves you’ve seen over and over in infomercials mainly using Latin American music which in general carry a low to moderate tempo. Twerkout uses moves that challenge your body and exploits your inner diva mainly using hip hop and electronic music which carry a much more intense and faster tempo, and include disco lights and dimmed lights to infuse a dance party feeling. In a Zumba class you will feel like you are “working out”, but Twerkout disguises the “workout” mindset to “Twerkout” to bass pumping, heart throbbing, best jamming music you’ve ever experienced. Once you have tried one Twerkout class you will instantly notice the difference.

Since twerking is a type of dance, have you changed it to make it a intense workout?

Yes, but don’t let the Twerk in Twerkout scare you off into thinking it’s anything related to a Miley Cyrus type of dance. In general terms, Twerking is a dance movement typically thrusting or shaking your buttocks, but there’s very little of that in the Twerkout class. Yes, you shake your bum but the dance moves are eloquently designed to keep it classy and fun targeting the most wanted areas for women. The word Twerk to me signifies new age boldness, confidence, and freedom of expression and this is something I want to give to all the Twerkout community of women in Dubai.

Best twerkers in your opinion?

Beyonce would probably take the cake for best twerking moves in my opinion.

Why is it exclusive to only women?

I wanted to create a judgement free class where women can let loose, release their inner inhibitions and feel comfortable in their own skin. Women love to dance but hate working out, so the birth of Twerkout materialized; uniquely combining the two with a fun & friendly party atmosphere. This class will have you doing Twerkout moves in dance clubs and even at work during your lunch hour with your girlfriends. It’s a community of fierce and confident women who encourage one another and aim at being happy and comfortable with themselves while pushing the envelope to become the best they can become.

What should you wear to a Twerkout class?

You should wear clothes that you are comfortable dancing in. Tank top, leggings, and sneakers are perfectly ok. Lipstick and loose hair are encouraged to help you feel more Twerkalicious.

What should you expect from a Twerkout class?

Expect to break out of your shell and get a great workout while improving flexibility, dancing skills, and a ego boost. The old mindset of traditional gyms are dying down because of their lack of innovation and motivation. Your body deserves a new type of workout and your soul demands it.

Join the Twerkout community of women who are fearless and sassy and experience the funnest dance workout party in Dubai! For more info, Contact Leila at leila@so-famous.com.

The GM Diet: Does It Really Work?

What is a GM diet you ask? Well it’s a weight loss program created by the General Motors Corporation to keep their employees healthy. It has similarities to Atkins and South beach diets, where specific foods are consumed in the given week.

The GM diet is a 7 day “weight loss” plan which has a vegetarian option as well. While everyone does lose weight during once the diet is completed, some tend to gain it back due to the fact that they go back to unhealthy habits of eating.

The idea behind the GM diet was to create a plan where people didn’t have to starve themselves to lose weight and along with weight loss, your body gets detoxified too. Here’s what the food intake during the 7 days looks like: -

  • Day 1. Only fruits. Just like in the regular GM diet, only fruits are allowed to be consumed on the first day. All fruits can be consumed in generous quantities except for bananas, as they are high in carbohydrates and potassium. Water intake should also be observed at 10-12 glasses during the whole day.

  • Day 2. The second day involves potato and vegetables. A cup of baked potato would serve as the body’s main energy source for the day, and then it can be followed up with vegetable dishes during lunch and dinner. Vegetable soup is highly powerful during this day, as it provides all the energy the body would need.
  • Day 3. Fruit and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables may be served the whole day, from breakfast to dinner, including midday snacks. Fruit juice can also be taken aside from water, although no bananas or potatoes are allowed.

  • Day 4. Bananas and milk. Banana and milk combos may be consumed all day, with vegetable soup servings during lunch and dinner. Banana and milk may be taken in the form of shakes, during breakfast and midday snacks.
  • Day 5. Brown rice and tomatoes. Or beef and tomatoes. One cup of rice is good to last for the day together with tomatoes in order to induce cleansing.
  • Day 6. Brown rice and vegetables. Or beef and vegetables. On this day mixed vegetables may be consumed all day, together with one cup of rice.
  • Day 7. Up to two cups of brown rice may be consumed, together with fruit and vegetable servings.

Eating According to Your Body Type

Eating healthy and avoiding processed food is the first step towards a better you. But there are other things to consider as well. Ayurveda stresses on how important it is to eat according to your body type.

Ayurveda is an ancient medical practice that originates from India. According to ayurveda, there are 3 body types or “doshas” namely, Vatta, Pitta, Kapha.

People with slender/small build are considered to be vatta. They are very thin, find it difficult to gain weight and they always feel cold.

Vatta body types should avoid dry food, carbonated drinks and raw vegetables. They should eat more warm, cooked food, drink lots of milk and introduce clarified butter (Ghee) to their diets, to help them gain weight.

These individuals have a medium build. They always feel warm and have a high level of energy.

Pitta body types should avoid spicy food, alcohol, vinegar, coffee and citrus/acidic foods. They should increase their intake of vegetables which have a high water content, like cucumbers and lettuce, and eat more fruits.

The largest of all the body types.Their physical stamina is high. They also have wide hips and shoulders.

A person with this body type should reduce their intake of salts, sweets and fats. They should eat food that are cooked with spices and eat lots of vegetables and legumes.

Organic Is The Way To Go

Organic Food

Diets help in losing weight, but you might compromise your health in order to achieve that goal weight. Opting for organic food keeps you healthy and your weight in check.

What does “organic” mean?

  • Food is only  labelled as organic if it is grown without the help of synthetic pesticides, bioengineered genes (GMOs), petroleum-based fertilizers, and sewage sludge-based fertilizers.

  • It also includes “organically” raised livestock, where animals are not given antibiotics, growth hormones and animal by products.

The Benefits

  • Organic food contains more antioxidants.

  • It contains lesser chemicals and pesticides.

  • It is fresher due to the lack of preservatives.

  • Organic farming is also better for the environment.

Organic food, though expensive, is beneficial for the body. Conventional foods are exposed to all kind of pesticides and then preserved to be shipped to stores. Years of eating conventionally produced food can lead to an accumulation of pesticides in our bodies, which leads to a weaker immune system.

Losing Weight After the Holidays

xmas holiday dinner

Yes tis the season to be jolly, and also worry about how one is going to lose the extra holiday pounds post January.  According to Forbes, “The traditional American Christmas dinner packs an average of 3000 calories. Considering that the recommended daily caloric intake for women ranges from 2000 (over age 25) to 1850 (over age 50).” We came up with 4 simple tips that can help you lose the weight you gained during the holidays without going through a strict diet.
1. Start your day with a nutritious breakfast
Skipping breakfast may induce you to overeat during the day. On the other hand, having a healthy meal in the morning would provide you with more energy and fulfill your appetite. The easiest meals to find and prepare are oatmeal, Greek yogurt, eggs, whole-wheat bread, as well as fruits like bananas, blueberries, and strawberries.
2. Determine your exercise
Choose an exercise that suits you best. Make the best of the weather in Dubai and run, jog, or even ride your bike.
3. Increase your metabolism
The best way to do that is by drinking green tea as it has a great impact on losing weight. Another way that boosts your metabolism is by lifting weights. According to Brad King, author of a 2003 report published in Alive: Canadian Journal of Health and Nutrition, muscle is the most metabolically-active element of the body. Thus, muscle mass burns more calories during the day.
4. Want to catch up on some movies you have missed during the holidays, but you are afraid that you would gain more calories from eating popcorn? Try eating air-popped popcorn as it has only 30 calories per cup. Researchers at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania stated, “Popcorn has more antioxidant substances called polyphenols than fruits and vegetables.”

Stefanie Ost on Staying in Shape

Stefanie Ost fitness

Stefanie how often do you work out?

Fitness is extremely important to me and I usually work out 5 days a week before coming to the office.

How do you manage your workouts when you are on the go?

If I am on the go or travelling, I love using an app called “Sworkit”, which gives you a quick workout depending on how many minutes you have and you don’t need a gym or any equipment besides a mat. Otherwise, also Yoga or just a quick 20-30min Cardio are other options I sometimes go for if I don’t have a lot of time.

Any tips to staying fit with a quick workout?

The key for me is going in the morning before going to work as it also helps to get a clear mind and focus better at work. I fear I would be a hopeless case if I had to go after work as I usually just feel so tired by then.

What music do you listen to while working out?

House music puts me in the right work out mood and makes working out fun.
How many minutes do you usually spend on the treadmill? Do you like to switch to other cardio machines?

I have to confess I absolutely hate running on the treadmill these days I prefer the bike as I can answer emails, read a book or play games on my phone at the same time.  What my trainer usually does is incorporating then 2-5min high speed running with incline in between lifting weights to get my heart rate up. About once or twice a week I spend one hour of cardio only and during which I am switching from bike, to the treadmill to the cross trainer. Yet, overall, I prefer weight training as the muscles you build will be burning calories even if you are doing nothing at all (so that’s in my point of view the much smarter approach if you want to stay in shape than doing endless cardio).

Can you give us a weekly chart as to your workouts?

Overall, I like a bootcamp style of workout. Usually I start the week on Sunday with a good leg and butt workout which includes lots of squats (wide, close and split squats but also Bulgarian squats sometimes, launches, stiff leg dead as some other weight lifting for legs). As this is usually very exhausting, it is the best for me to wake up and start the week.

On Mondays I change then to some really heaving abs exercises including Burpees (which are really a killer). On Tuesdays I like to focus on my upper body including Shoulders, Chest and Arms.
On Wednesday I usually feel so sore that I am having a Cardio break or playing Tennis for a change, while Thursday I hit the gym again with some obliques and tie work out. Fridays I usually rest and Saturdays are usually Cardio or Yoga days.

S.O. Beauty Secrets

Stefanie Ost always share her favorite beauty secrets with our team here at S.O. so we asked her to share some of those with you our lovely audience.

Stefanie what is one of your best kept beauty secrets?

I have plenty of beauty secrets but here are just a few of my favorite:

If you have a pimple and you know it’s gonna look really nasty, apply Manuka Honey on it before going to bed and the next day your complexion will be a lot more clear. Honey has been known as an antimicrobial and antibacterial properties since prehistoric times.  Manuka honey is honey produced from bees that eat only plants flower known as manuka or tea plants in several countries.

I take vitamin E oil which is fabulous for your skin, Chlorella tablets and Spirulina (a species of algae as seen in photo above) which is packed with minerals.  I love to add Chia Seeds to my foods as they are full of omega 3 fatty acids which are also good for your skin and apparently they help with metabolism.

Argan tree is one of the world’s oldest tree species. This tree grows only in southwest Morocco, between Essaouira and Agadir. Oil from the argan tree is known as an oil rich in antioxidants and vitamin E so that both are used in skin and hair. This oil is absorbed much more easily than the beauty oils in general.

Perhaps this is not a secret anymore as everyone has heard of the benefits of juicing, but  it is definitely one of my favorite beauty remedies.  Just don’t think that because your juicing that you wont be needing your daily intake of eating fruits and vegetables as well! Juicing will supercharge your nutrient intake by providing you with pure micronutrients, vitamins and enzymes so you can kick start your metabolism and give your body a break from all of the strange chemicals you’ve been challenging it to process until now.

Prepare your fruits and veggies the night before if you plan on making a morning juice by selecting the ingredients for your juice, washing the produce, placing them in a storage container in the fridge and assembling the juicer in your kitchen so it’s ready.
