How To Treat Sunburns

Living in Dubai, I have lost count of how many times I got sunburnt. The summer is amazing for those who love to go to the beach and tan but sometimes the heat gets out of control and you get burnt. Or you fall asleep on the beach and get burnt. Well that’s how it usually happens to me.

Prevention is better than any cure. Make sure that you apply adequate amounts of sunscreen. It helps not only in preventing sunburns, it is also known for preventing ageing due to sun exposure.

Here’s a few remedies than help in treating sunburnt skin

Baking Soda

Mix a couple tablespoons of baking soda with cool bath water and have a soak. Make sure that you don’t soak for more than 15 minutes as it can excessively dry out your skin. Once you get out, air dry yourself without using a towel. Don’t wipe off the baking soda on your skin.

Aloe-Veera

Aloe Vera

Using fresh aloe vera leaves is the best for sunburns. Cut open the leaves in half and apply the gel like liquid onto sunburnt areas of your skin. Apply as often as 5 times a day until the sunburn is gone.

potato

Potatoes

Cut into cubes and add them to the blender. blend until they are in a semi liquid form. Apply the potatoes directly on the skin where it is burnt. Once the potatoes dry up on your skin, go ahead and take a cool shower to wash them off.

- Make sure you drink lots of water as it speeds up the healing process.

- Moisturise. Your skin is dehydrated from all that time in the sun.

- Avoid using soaps, loofahs or anything that can irritate your sunburnt skin. You can use mild soaps and wash cloths.

Get Gorgeous Skin Using Honey

Sometimes the things you find in the kitchen tend to be better than the goo you get in bottles. If it isn’t already obvious, I’m pro natural remedies as opposed to slapping something on my skin that has so many ingredients, most I have no clue what they really are.

One major benefit of using natural ingredients is that there is no side effects (unless you are allergic to it) but natural remedies take a long time for visible results to be seen. However, the results are long lasting.

Health-Benefits-of-Honey

“Raw, unheated, organic honey has antibacterial properties that speed the healing of infections and wounds, including acne. It also contains antioxidants, which neutralize free radicals to promote healthy skin”.

It also helps with :-

  • Acne: Honey is naturally antibacterial, so it’s great for acne treatment and prevention.
  • Aging: Full of antioxidants, it is great for slowing down aging.
  • Complexion boost: It is extremely moisturizing and soothing, so it helps create a glow.
  • Pores: Honey is clarifying because it opens up pores making them easy to unclog.

Some of my favourite recipes are

Honey Almond Scrub - Mix equal parts of ground almonds and honey. This helps in removing all the dead cells and softening your skin.

Honey Exfoliator – Mix two parts honey and one part baking soda. This helps in gently exfoliating your face and body.

Honey Facial Cleanser – Mix honey with either coconut or jojoba oil. This helps in removing make up and unclogging your pores.

Organic Products

Dr Hauschka face care group.ashx

We got lots of feedback and comments on S.O’s post and advice on organic make up so here we are with more information.

Stefanie what ingredient one should look at while choosing an organic makeup product?

Personally, I suggest looking out for USDA organic-certified products and be aware of so called “natural” products, which only claim to be natural and they are in fact petroleum based and contain in fact only very little plant extracts and lots of artificial fragrances.

What are the advantages of using organic makeup products for long term use?

I believe that using organic makeup and skincare can definitely improve the condition of your skin but also help to limit the amount of toxins we are exposing ourselves to. By detoxing and absorbing less toxins, you start looking more beautiful and believe it or not begin to lose weight considering that you are following a healthy diet as well.

Which organic products do you recommend to keeping skin healthy and fresh?

I have begun washing with face with Manuka honey and using Organic Argan Oil as a night cream and organic Shea butter whipped with Argan Oil for Daytime. I also really love Dr. Hauschka products which I buy at the Organic Shop.

SPF Protection

tan1

Even though its been “cold”  for Dubai standards, we still get a lot of sun here so our blog contributor Georgina Antakly decided to do a post on the importance of SPF. Little known facts you may or may not already know. Contrary to what many of you believe, wearing SPF does not translate into not getting a tan, plus do you really want to look like Snookie from the Jersey shore? Here are some secret pointers and the best options out there to keep your skin smooth, glowing and more importantly safe from the sun.
Did you know?

Research has found that the number one skin cancer spot on women is their calves, be sure to cover yourself from head to toe in SPF. Many people put SPF around the main spots on their face but forget important and sensitive areas such as the hairline and ears.

Sunscreens DO have an expiration date and the protecting ingredients can break down in the heat, so be sure to store them somewhere shady and check their expiration regularly.

Always be sure to reapply after taking a dip, sweating or in general after two hours just to be safe and not burn.

Some of my favorite products out there now-

For a good general SPF go with Supergoop a new brand that comes in all different styles, SPF for the face and body and after suncare. Cream not your thing ? go with an oil-based SPF such as L’oreal Sublime Sun 50+, For those of you that are more outdoorsy, try Neutrogena Ultimate Sport 100+. For those of you who spend a lot of time traveling, a good everyday one is Estee Lauder Daywear Spf 50. For those of you that want a good ole fashioned tropical smelling SPF, Hawaiian Tropic brings you a new line of ultra luxe products such as the Silk Hydration which starts at SPF 15 and up, you can also try their new Aloe Vera cream for a relaxing cooling sensation.

Last but not least, you can always fake a sun-kissed body, Most brands are coming out with their own lines of self-tanners, my favorite ones are L’oreal Sublime Bronze that comes in an airbrush spray so you get a flawless, streakless look or you can get it in lotion form. For a pricier option, you can try the St. Tropez brand, which many of today’s celebrities swear by. Ladies at the end of the day, just remember that sexy glow does not always pay off at the end, be smart and SPF savvy and go enjoy those summer vacations you’ve worked so hard for.

Stefanie Ost’s Tips on Looking and Feeling Your Ultimate Best!

Stefanie Ost

Stefanie Ost,  Founder of Wilhelmina Models Dubai and SO,  was a former fashion model who has graced the covers and appeared in editorials for Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar and Marie Claire all over the world. She’s  walked the runway for Cavalli and Dior until she decided to settle in Dubai and had the opportunity to turn her modeling experience into a business helping women and men look and feel their best while also assisting the region’s aspiring young models achieve their dreams. In 2011, Stefanie entered The Big Start, a student entrepreneur competition run by Al Tamimi Investments, and her winning business idea scooped the top prize.

Every Wednesday Stefanie will feature her personal favorite beauty tips and advice on looking and feeling better. Today we ask Stefanie about “ juicing” and the benefits and disadvantages of this fad that is taking Dubai by storm.

What do you think about “ juicing” and how do you do it?

I absolutely love juicing! Every day I have at least 1 or 2 fresh veggie juices that keep me revitalized and glowing. Once in a while I might do a few days of a juice fast which can become addictive as you feel just fabulous afterwards. I do however feel that it is important  not to live on juices only (which is the side effect of this new trend that many young women stop eating solid food completely and just live off their juices). Personally, I consider juices as a great detox tool and as an easily digestible “supplement” to a balanced diet.

As a model did you ever juice to prepare for a show?

I was always quite lucky and never really had to diet much. Yet, if I had a big show coming up now and I had to lose some excess weight, I would do a 3-5 day juice fasting cleanse, which would not only help me to get back in shape, but will also leave me with a beautifully glowing skin. I want to add that one of the benefits of juicing is that it makes you aware of what you eat so once you start eating solid food again you are much more careful with what you put in your mouth and more often than not you become healthier.

What’s your best nutrition advice?

Its all about balance. I don’t think one should count calories and become obsessed with diets, its important to eat as much fresh vegetables and fruits as possible and definitely avoid sugar and sodas.A great sugar alternative is Stevia (it’s natural and has almost no calories). Artificial sweeteners such as Sweet and Low are the worst, the ingredients actually make you even fatter. Also, it is advisable to stay away from white flour (such as white bread, regular pasta, white rice) and instead opt for  healthy grains such as brown rice and whole grain). Finally try to stay away from dairy and too much animal protein – it’s  really not good for your beauty.

An Interview With Dubai’s Beauty Dannielle Blaker

Dannielle Blaker

What do you love most about Dubai Dannielle?

There are so many things I love about Dubai, but the main thing for me is beach living! The weather has had a tremendous impact on me and has made outdoor activities easy accessible which has become a big part of my lifestyle and makes me happy. I’ve spent most of my life in cold weather cities with a lot of rain (Vancouver, London, Luxembourg) and until I moved to Dubai, I had no idea how much weather affected my mood. I’m more positive and I’ve finally become a morning person who loves waking up, as I’m greeted with sunshine!

Tell us about your beauty routine Dannielle!

I’m a firm believer that what you eat and your lifestyle contribute to a person’s beauty. For me, I try to incorporate eating well (lots of greens and water) into my routine along with weekly reflexology to keep the energy flowing. As for skincare, I use a gentle face scrub 4 times a week followed by a toner with 2% salicylic acid as I’m a little obsessed with getting rid of dead skin. I have several night creams on rotation depending on level of moisture needed and I always wear at least 30 SPF on my face everyday.

What are 3 of your favorite beauty products?

- I really like Alba Botanica products and I’ve recently discovered their Deep Clean Astringent toner.

- The Faceshop ( South Korean brand) BB Cream Power Perfection.

- Natura Bisse C+C vitamin scrub

Best Makeup tip you d like to share with our audience?

This is a really big secret but it’s the best tip I’ve ever been told so I’ll share it. There’s a liquid solution called Latisse and if you apply it to your eyelashes regularly, they grow crazy long! I get it from the US and it’s usually by prescription only, however I think it’s become available over the counter now due to popularity.

How do you stay in such great shape?

I run a lot. I find it’s the best way to keep fit and it’s a great stress relief for me. I like to mix up the running with yoga, Cross Fit and I love trying all the new fitness trends/ classes that come to Dubai. I get bored easily and I find this keeps exercise interesting. I also go horse riding 2 times a week and play on a competitive beach volleyball team.

Anything else you’d like to share?

This wonderful city is new but it’s growing up so fast and it’s great to be a part of it. I work in digital advertising and this is somewhat new to the Middle East compared to North America or Europe. I love being part of an industry that is learning, pushing the boundaries and trying new things everyday. It allows us to be innovative within this region.

Quick Way to Smooth Skin: Dry Brushing

dry brushing

Dry brushing is a great way to slough flaky, dead skin off your body, especially as prep before applying self-tanner.

Spas have offered the service forever, and doing it at home is ridiculously easy. All you need is a soft natural-bristle brush. ”When you give people brushes of all sorts, they think it’s a scrub brush—like you’re cleaning pots and pans,” says  dermatologist Karyn Grossman. “But this is your skin, and you need to be gentle. You’re not supposed to be red or scratched after.” She recommends rubbing in a light, circular motion before hopping into the shower, taking it easy on your chest and avoiding your face completely.  ”You can be a little tougher on your knees, elbows, ankles, and the tops of your feet, where the skin is thicker.”

Then, when you’re ready to shower, cleanse with a mild body wash and follow up with an equally mild moisturizer; a bolder scrub or anti-acne wash may leave the skin stinging. “You’re removing that surface layer, which temporarily makes your skin more sensitive. Otherwise, for two minutes of dry brushing, you will be rewarded with skin that feels soft, smooth, and instantly refreshed.

What are your 3 favorite skin care products?

Super hard to decide since there are so many great products for different things but the 3 that I use every day are:

- ZO Skin Health Exfoliating cleanser

- ZO Oclipse Sunscreen & Primer

- SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic

Skinceuticals-C-E-Ferulic
What are your tips to protect your skin from the hot summer months ahead?

-Cover up with sunglasses, hats and always wear a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB radiation with an SPF of 30 or greater.  Most importantly is to apply the sunscreen 30 minutes before you go out into the sun and to constantly re-apply.  If you forget and your skin is a bit red and irritated, a little bit of aloe vera will make it feel better and try to skip the sun the next day.

How do you prepare for beach time holidays?

Well, I always like to exercise but I just started going to Barry’s Bootcamp and it is super hard but insanely motivating to have everyone around your working their bums off.  Of course summer is the perfect motivation!
How would you describe your style?

Style wise I am classic with a little twist.  I am loving the rock n roll knuckle rings and feathers by my dear friend Mesi Shashoua.

Must have accessories this summer?

Anything that is bright and with color! And never forget a beautiful manicure and pedicure.
How do you keep a balance in your busy life?

I think it’s always important to do what you love and be surrounded by people you enjoy; then your days are balanced and effortless….and of course being a bit neurotic, liking making lists, helps ensure nothing is forgotten!  At this stage working part time for me creates a great balance of being a mother, wife and doctor.

Are you involved with any special projects or charities?

I am involved with GOSH, Great Ormond Street Hospital, a children’s hospital in London and I am helping organize a fun under the big top themed party for 300 kids and their parents to raise money for the hospital.
