90′s Fashion Comeback

Fashion keeps getting recycled and reinvented. Lately I’ve quite a few trends that reminds me of fashion back in the 90′s.

You’d be surprised to find what made the list

High waisted jeans

With the rise of the low waisted skinny jeans in the last couple of years, I’m glad to see both high waisted and low waisted jeans coexist peacefully on the racks.

Ripped jeans

The 90′s is often thought of as the grunge era, what’s more grunge than ripped jeans? Ripped jeans are now a wardrobe staple if you want a casual look.

Harem pants

Remember the iconic parachute pants MC Hammer wore in his music video? Well harem pants are back. They don’t have a puffy look that parachute pants do, they are more tailored.

Recently luxury fashion houses like Chanel and Dior have come out with “fashionable” sneakers. Needless to say, sneakers are the biggest shoe trend right now.

Denim overalls

Overalls were big back in the 90′s. It’s slowly creeping back in our wardrobes right now. But now we have a variety of overalls to choose from and not only denim.

Timberland boots

Timberland boots are regularly seen on celebrities like Jay Z, Chris Brown and many others. Since they have a celebrity following, it’s not too long before these are seen on every other person.

Flannel/ Plaid shirts

Flannel shirts in the 90′s were never buttoned. It was always worn on top of a graphic Tee. Now it’s worn buttoned up and tucked in or tied around the waist or even layered beneath a sweater.

Pint sized Fashion

Kids are adorable. What makes them even more adorable? Fashion of course!

Needless to say, but kids nowadays are more fashionable than I ever was back in the day. Hopefully nobody will ever see all the horrible outfits I wore. Ah the time before camera phones. You could get away with almost anything!

Here are my favourite pint sized fashionistas who can give you a run for your money!

Loving This Week: Vita fede

I’m always on the lookout for new arm candy and I’ve been obsessed Vita Fede bracelets for some time now. I absolutely adore the simplicity of the design. It feels like a classic Cartier Love bracelet (without the hefty price tag) and goes with everything in my wardrobe!

The brains behind the brand is Cynthia Sakai. She describes Vita Fede as “a fusion of Asian, American and European culture that represents an elevated aesthetic, a lifestyle and a point of view that are universal.”

While the basic design remains the same, the materials used changes. It’s handcrafted in Italy using brass, natural stones, Swarovski crystals, sterling silver and 24K gold.

Here’s what I’ve been lusting after!

7 Must Haves For The Summer

There’s three ways to be sure that summer in Dubai has begun. One, your makeup melts off within five minutes of stepping out. Two, the temperature reaches 30 degrees before the clock hits 9am. Three, the roads are surprisingly empty because everyone’s on a vacay.

If you aren’t travelling anywhere this summer, here’s a list of things you need to survive summer in Dubai.

1. The Trio: A pair of shades, sunscreen and a floppy hat. (For those brave souls who go to the beach in this weather, may you never get sunburnt)

2. Triangl swimsuits (For those late night pool parties)

3. Moisturiser with a high SPF. (Nobody wants to look older than they actually are)

4. Sandals. (Anything that doesn’t completely cover your foot and make it sweat, like sneakers)

5. Pedicure. (Your feet need to be at their best since you’ll be wearing open toe shoes)

6. Maxi dresses. (Pants? In this weather? Nope)

7. Skater dresses (For chic evenings out)

Style Crush! Lupita Nyong’o

Saying that Lupita Nyong’o is having a good year is an understatement. A year ago she was virtually unknown until her critically acclaimed role in the movie, 12 Years a Slave. She’s won an Oscar and now she’s landed her first ever Vogue cover!

While she’s known for her acting, she’s also known for her impeccable style. Working with stylist  Micaela Erlanger she’s managed to pull off 60 red carpet looks, most of which have been a hit.

Here are some of my personal favourite looks of Lupita.

Comfy and Chic Airport Dressing

Comfort is key while travelling. Well, so is style! Unless you’re a jetsetter, you probably haven’t perfected that comfy and chic look. Personally my look consists of a loose white tee, a black leather jacket, dark wash skinny jeans and my favourite pair of converse shoes.

Here are some of my favourite looks of high fliers!

Summer’s Must Have Shoes

The shoe trends for this summer are reminiscent of the 90′s, with the comeback of mules and birkenstock sandals. And for once fashionable footwear seems to be comfy as well pretty.

Interview: Lady Mauve

Recently I had the pleasure of interviewing Melissah Russo, the creator of Lady Mauve. Lady Mauve is a fashion label that sells handcrafted jewellery and kimono jackets. Its known for its one of a kind statement necklaces.

SO: Tell us a bit about yourself and how you started your label?

MR: My name is Melissah and I’m from Melbourne, Australia. I’ve been in Dubai for about eight years now. I’ve always been around design. My mom’s an amazing seamstress and costume designer so as I was growing up, I learnt how to do basic sewing and helped her with all the costumes as I got older as there was a lot of work involved. My dad was in one of Melbourne first punk rock bands. I’ve grown up around music artists and designers my whole life.

I started Lady Mauve in 2010. I’ve always enjoyed making jewellery, its something that I’ve done for a long time and I just started showcasing at markets in Dubai.

SO: What was the inspiration behind Lady Mauve?

MR: Lady mauve is inspired by Lady Pink. Lady pink was the first female graffiti artist, who is based in New York City. A lot of my inspirations come from graffiti work. A lot of my colour choices and patterns come from that art form. I really love graffiti. I love the whole graffiti subculture.

SO: How would you describe your designs?

MR: Lady mauve is very bold, colourful, very statement pieces. A lot of the pattern choices and colour choices are like artwork, so everybody can see my designs actually can tell it’s a Lady Mauve piece. There is a bohemian influence as well. Over the years people have really appreciated what I’ve done and now I do pop up stores, private showcasing, I’ve participated in fashion forward, which was an amazing experience, to meet other designers in the region.

SO: What challenges did you face when starting your label?

MR: There are a lot of challenges when you start a label. I showcase at a lot of pop up stores and markets so it’s really about putting the hard work in and not giving up it’s almost been four years now I’ve been doing it and only now I’ve gotten noticed.

SO: Any advice for anyone who wants to start their own label?

MR: I find that in design things don’t happen overnight and if you keep pushing and you believe in yourself your label will get recognised, and if you have an idea and you want to do something, it’s just never giving up and just believing in yourself, it’s very important. Networking, keeping up-to-date with social media is very important as well.

Exciting news! Coming soon to Lady Mauve are customised denim jackets! Here’s a picture of Melissah’s.

Fashion Forward: The Hair and Make up

While most of the attention goes to the clothing (duh, its a fashion show), the hair and make up this season was absolutely phenomenal. Here are some of the best hair and make up looks from the shows. The season’s hottest trend seems to be hair accessories, whether its a turban, a flower head piece or Amato’s way, there’s no way you can go wrong.

KEORO Resort Wear

Evelyn Virag Keoro

Today we interview Evelyn and Oana two young and talented UAE based Italian designers who created KEORO, a luxury resort-wear collection born in Dubai.

The collection is a direct reflection of Dubai’s lifestyle with year-round summer-like climate and mix of sea and desert that is shown through the collection by the usage of aqua green, blue, bronze and white. The prints are inspired by the culture and the sight of the region: paisleys as an ancient Persian and Indian motif, dégradé as the shades of the magical sunsets and hues of blue that denote the sea. It embodies the modern and sophisticated woman who desires to be elegant and sensual, yet looks for multi-functionality and comfort. The collection is multi-faceted and can be worn on a casual day at the beach or to a glamorous yacht party and further into the evening as the kaftan transforms into an evening dress

Evelyn, Oana what inspired you to start a resort wear collection?

Our collection is inspired by our travels, our love for the sea and our free spirits. We also realized it was difficult here in Dubai to find something different other than heavily ornate and embroidered beach kaftans, so we decided to create a clean and sophisticated design that would appeal to women like us.

What are your greatest influences or fashion icons?

Other resort wear designers like Melissa Odabash, and Heidi Klein but mainly our inspiration comes from observing people on the beach all over the world.

How would you describe the KEORO woman?

She is modern, sophisticated and sensual. Who appreciates multi-functionality and comfort.

Challenges of starting your own fashion collection?

The biggest challenge is reaching out to the target audience. Creating a collection from start to finish requires a lot of effort, dedication, and patience. Also because we decided to produce the collection here in the UAE finding the right factory that could provide the highest standards of quality.

Favorite boutiques?

Candela, Boutique 1, Sauce, Salinas

Thank you girls for the interview anything else you would like to share with our audience?

All we want to say is that we must all follow our dreams. It is our dreams that define us, our spirit that guides us and eventually our hard work that helps us grow. We all have it in us to think beyond the traditional boundaries.
